Pūrva Bhāga – Tapini Kalā -

10 April 2016

Prior to verse #4, there is a half-verse:

ṣodānyāsādayo nyāsā nyāskhaṇde sameritāḥ ॥ 4॥

This verse discusses the various deva-s as presiding over the various parts of the body.

In some versions, this half verse will be missing.

Here, we take the second half of the previous verse as the first half this verse and continue.

antaryāmakrmaścaiva bhairyāgakrmastathā ।
mahāyāgakramaścāva pūjākhande prakīrtitā ॥ 5 ॥

Mahāyāga is the enlarged form of Bahiryā̄ga with the addition of eight types of worship – ashṭaga.

Pūrva Bhāga – Tapini Kalā -

ṣodānyāsādayo nyāsā nyāsakhaṇde samīritāḥ ।
antaryāmakrmaścaiva bhairyāgakrmastathā ॥ 4 ॥

Nyāsa means the assignment of different parts of the body to different deities. By doing so, Śrī Devi becomes the whole body itself. Shoḍanyāsa is of two kinds – laghu (simple) and mahā (great). In lagunyāsa Śrī Devi is assigned to different parts of the body in different forms – Ganesha, yogini-s, constellations etc. (The second half will be taken up for meditation when the next verse dealing with Pooja Kanda is discussed).

Pūrva Bhāga – Tapini Kalā -

varṇitam śrīpuraṃcāpi mahāvibhavavistaram ।
śrīmatpancadakśākṣaryā mahimā varṇirtastatā ॥ 3 ॥

The glory and grandeur of Śrī Devi̛’s residence, Śrīpuram, was described by You. The greatness of Śrī Panchadashāksharee mantrā was also described by You.

As nothing is comparable to it, Sŕī Devī’s ‘puram’ (city), has characteristic properties of both worldly actions (pravrutti) as well as inaction (nivrutti).  It is Sŕīpuram because it is greater than (Śrī) than all other cities. It is believed to be situated in three locations – beyond the manifest and unmanifest universe, the second on top of Mount Mēru and the third in the Ocean of Milk. Each have six gardens and nine peripheries.

Pūrva Bhāga – Tapini Kalā -

pūrvam prāṭurbhavo mātustataḥ paṭṭābhiṣecanam ।
bhaṇḍāsuravadhaścaiva vistareṇa tvayoditaḥ ॥ 2 ॥

The story of Śrī Devī’s earlier appearance, Her coronation, and her killing of Bhanḍāsura has been extensively narrated by You. (Prāthurba) means ‘appearance’. This does not mean that She appear in the earlier (Pūrvam) and was not existent later.  It only means that She appeared at a specific time, in a specific form for a specific purpose. She always exists as all.
